When the Miami-Dade County Department of Water and Sewer was implementing a remote monitoring leak detection system for their water distribution mains, they encountered a problem.

Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer maintains more than 8,500 miles of underground water lines as well as 4,100 miles of sewer lines. They ensure high-quality drinking water and wastewater services to 2.3 million residents and thousands of visitors.

“The devices had limits with communication,” explains Miguel Cortes, Leak Detection Equipment Specialist for Miami-Dade, “we found our cast iron lids were impeding the signal of the devices.”

With a lack of existing solutions in the market, they reached out to Bingham & Taylor.

“Immediately B&T’s design team met with us and so began a collaborative effort that would produce a product that would meet our needs.”

Solution

By combining the skills of B&T’s engineering team and the knowledge of Miami-Dade’s technicians, the team was able to come up with a solution for their valve box lids.

A cast iron lid with a round plastic insert allowed the signal to be transmitted without sacrificing durablility and lid integrity. The transmitter device was mounted under the plastic insert allowing for proper signal propogation.

“We are grateful to Bingham & Taylor for their careful attention to detail and hard work,” Miguel adds “I strongly recommend the services of Bingham & Taylor and look forward to working with B&T in the future.”
